Abstract

Preforms with various binder content were made of the aluminium borate whiskers, and then aluminium alloy composites were fabricated by squeezing molten metal into the preforms. Alumina sol were used for the binder. We examined deformation, hardness and density of the composites, furthermore observed the structures by the electron microseope. We obtained the results as follows.
(1) Defomation, hardness and density of the composites were decreased with increase of the binder content, that is due to decreasing of volume fraction of the whisker within the composites.
(2) Binder content of 1 mass% is sufficient for the aluminium borate whiskers.
