Abstract

Feasibility tests of rapeseed oil as diesel engine fuel have been carried out on two single-cylinder diesel engines. Engine performance and exhaust emissions of rapeseed oil were compared with those of diesel fuel and it was shown that the oxygen content of rapeseed oil effectively worked to promote the oxidation of soot, thereby reducing the black smoke in both type engines. NO emission is dependent on the degree of fuel evaporation, that is, NO from a direct-injection engine is slightly increased with rapeseed oil at higher loads where compression gas temperatures are high. In the case of a pre-chamber engine there causes a small decrease with rapeseed oil because the insufficient evaporation of rapeseed oil restricts the initial combustion. And the engine run was quite possible during the tests, so that it is expected that rapeseed oil might have a potential for future diesel engine fuel.
