Abstract

In practicing the piano, it is very important for a teacher to give each student lesson tunes according to her ability. The lesson tunes usually are specified from books of tunes which vary in difficulty. In addition, the lesson tunes in each book vary in difficulty and are not always arranged in order of difficulty. For instructional purposes it is effective to arrange hierachically the lesson tunes selected from among several books. Hierarchical diagram of the lesson tunes by difficulty aids a teacher in assigning tunes suitable for each student. As a result students and teachers can have a better understanding of their goal and grade. This paper proposes a technique for determining hierarchical diagram of lesson tunes by using the interpretive structural modeling method. Use of the interpretive structural modeling method does not require a great deal of mathematical knowledge and permits efficient determination of the actual ranking in accordance with the conclusion of one or more teachers. The technique is explained by using actual data.
