Abstract

The physical properties of underwater weldsments are adversely affected by the quenching or cooling action of the surrounding water. And many has been published about the properties of the underwater weldsments. But study on the weld cold cracking by underwater is very little. Generally, the type of cracking occurs in the heat affected zone. For the purpose of estimating susceptibility of steels to weld cold cracking in underwater wet welding implant weld cold cracking test method were used. The test welding was carried out by using gravity welding method at the depth of 20 cm in city water. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Lower critical stress for cold cracking at atmosphere has good correlation with Ceq value of steels and diffusible hydrogen content. 2) Lower critical stress for cold cracking at underwater is lower than its value at atmosphere. And fracture time is very short. 3) Lower critical stress for cold cracking at underwater has good correlation with maximum hardness at heat affected zone.
