Abstract

It is well known that the weldments between ferritic and austenitic steels indicate a diffusion of carbon from ferritic to austenitic partner as an influence of temperature and due to higher solubility of carbon in γ-iron in comparison for α-iron. In this report, the effect of carbon diffusion on the fatigue behavior of dissimilar welded joints was investigated. For the purpose of this study, especially, three different angles between maximal principle stress direction and welding direction were used. Generally, fatigue fracture plane of metallic materials correspond to roughly at the maximal principle stress plane and it is well known. But in case of welded joints, the change of a crack propagation path were uniquely related to the condition of the material immediately adjacent to the crack tip. The hard heat affected zone and carburized zone were found to change the crack propagation path. For the consideration of crack propagation of welded joints, the propagation path need to take account the metallurgical and mechanical conditions of each parts in welded joint.
