Abstract

The effects of Be addition to Al-Zn-Mg alloys on the aging phenomena were investigated by hardness and transmission electron microscopy. The specimens were solution-treated at 465℃ for 3 hrs, quenched into iced water, and finally subjected to aging at various temperature. The results obtained were as follows: (1) The addition of Be is effective on the increase in precipitation hardening of Al-Zn-Mg alloys. This may be due to the increase in the number of G.P. Zones. (2) The addition of Be has little effect on the time required for hardness to reach the maximum. (3) Stability of G.P. Zone is nearly constant even when Be is added to the Al-Zn-Mg alloys.
