Abstract

This paper examined the relationship between students' incidental word learning and their level of English
proficiency, between acquisition and vocabulary frequency in a text, and between acquisition and contextual richness of words. Participants, who are second graders of college of technology or kosen, are Japanese learners of English at two proficiency levels. One reading text and three vocabulary tests were conducted over a one-week period. Analyses of the data revealed that word learning were significant for each group. The higher proficiency group were able to acquire more words than the lower group. Word frequency in the text was unrelated to vocabulary acquisition. However, contextual richness of words were found to be related. In addition, an interesting spin-off was produced. A shorter text was found to be suitable for analyzing the effects of contextual richness, while a longer one is ideal for studying the effects of word frequency.
