Abstract

To improve the exhaust gas quality and thermal efficiency, Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI)Engine is regarded as the next generarion engine. However, the control of autoignition is difficult because they are controlled by chemical kinetics of fuel-air mixtures. In this study, combustion characteristics of Biogas in a HCCI Engine are investigated by chemical kinetics computations. Biogas(CH4:CO2=60:40) mixtures are prepared with equivalence rations ranging from 0.2 to 0.6. After that, the blend ratio of CO2 is changed from 20 to 60 mole % in CH4 to elucidate the effect of fluctuations in biogas composition. As a result, it is clarified that autoignion timing and combustion duration are affected by fluctuations in fuel composition. Moreover, there are distinct differences in the exhaust gas quality and thermal efficiency.
