Abstract

Close binary stars are important sources of astronomical information. Photometric data can be acquired from these stars using a small-aperture telescope, and the period, radius ratio, and ratio of the luminous intensities of the component stars can be derived from the light curve. To extract the physical quantities from the light curve, we use the analysis software PHOEBE (Physics of Eclipsing Binaries), which implements the Wilson-Devinney code. Some theoretical knowledge of eclipsing binary stars is necessary to properly apply PHOEBE. In this article, we summarize the fundamental theory of eclipsing binary system, especially the Roche model, and introduce an analysis of HW Vir using PHOEBE as a practice for light curve analysis.
